Communication breakdowns can occur in any part of the clinical encounter. The clinician must be prepared to help the patient adopt a pro-active role in communicating their thoughts on treatment. In using this technique, the clinician helps the patient better communicate their history and preference by positioning the clinician as a student and the patient as a teacher, ultimately sharing the onus for understanding among both parties.
