Fish for Change Talk

Guide the Patient Into Talking About Behavior Change More Quickly
WithAlex Kipp

In motivational interviewing, clinicians nudge patients into changing their behavior. However, given the time constraints of a typical visit, clinicians can inadvertently spend more time discussing the patient’s reasons for sustaining behaviors than reasons for change. This chapter reviews the technique and importance of encouraging change talk and emphasizing the patient’s positive progress.
