Understand What Patients Think Medications Will Do for Them to Clarify Treatment and Improve Adherence
WithScott A. Simpson, Anna K. McDowell
Pages 3

Patients’ beliefs about medications influence adherence and treatment planning. The importance of considering the patient’s perspective on medication use is as important as discussing risks, benefits, and side effects of the prescription; the quality of the therapeutic interaction itself enhances adherence. This chapter reviews an approach for better understanding the patient’s beliefs around medication recommendations. Approaches for working with patients who are unwilling or unable to discuss their beliefs about medication are also reviewed.
