Experiment With Change
Implementing change can be daunting for patients. This chapter reviews the technique of making changes as an experiment for a set period of time. This technique lowers the barriers to change and mitigates rigid, dichotomous thinking styles that inhibit healthy behavior change. The patient is also positioned to achieve small successes that can be reinforced and used to elucidate barriers to further change. Pitfalls in the use of this technique are described.
