Redirect Demanding Patients
Demanding or entitled patients sometimes attempt to intimidate the clinician into ordering tests and treatments that are not indicated. Entitlement is frustrating to manage and makes the clinician feel devalued. This chapter introduces a technique to validate and re-direct the entitled patient’s demands into a discussion of treatment goals and what comprises quality care. The psychological motivations of demanding or entitled patients are briefly reviewed as background for effectively managing this challenging clinical scenario.
