ABSTRACT

This chapter explores implications for the collection, analysis and publication of ethnographic research on physical education (PE) in the light of the 'literary turn' which has swept through sociology and anthropology. It sets out the theoretical and methodological background to the exercise, presents the data, and analyses those data in the light of the theoretical and methodological background. The body of the girl who learnt all the physical disciplines associated with the sports, such as the standard raquet strokes of tennis and badminton, the several swimming strokes, the routines of gymnastics and trampolining, and the basics of athletics, would indeed be disciplined. Throughout the lesson there is a clear thread of emphasis about the marking off, or setting apart, of the PE activities, not only from everyday life at home, but from each other by the specialist clothing and equipment.
