ABSTRACT

In order to systematically explore the concept of self-maintenance within LDSE contexts, we conducted an operational assessment in which we interviewed nine subject matter experts (e.g., astronaut, flight director, payload communicator or PayComm, crew support psychologist, analog research director, crewmember, mission operations planner) to determine the particular challenges that the crew faces during spaceflight and how these challenges relate to self-maintenance. This chapter provides an examination of the pressures of LDSE as well as proposed solutions. First, we outline the key issues that were highlighted as a result of our operational assessment that are expected to make team self-maintenance both challenging and important within the context of long-duration spaceflight. Second, we provide ten best practices for ensuring effective self-maintenance of individual crewmembers and the team as a whole.
