ABSTRACT

The Multifamily Psychoanalysis Group (MFPG) is a large group made up of several family units, including patients. The MFPG has some basic rules: each participant has the right to talk; speakers and speeches are equally important; and the order of speakers is decided by a show of hands. Multifamily Psychoanalysis influences operators, patients and their relatives, as it sets a mood that facilitates self-observation in each participant. Self-observation helps to focus on what anyone can do in order to improve he/she’s situation, and helps operators to stop feeling alone when they face mental illness. Multi-family Psychoanalysis has deeply changed the way of thinking about psychiatric intervention and its realization. Psychiatric issues can be addressed along a path through the different facilities of a health department, framed in the psychoanalytic thought.
