ABSTRACT

Negotiation is a classic mechanism for international conflict management, one often used in diplomatic channels and between states in international bodies. This chapter examines negotiation as an international conflict management mechanism, focusing on cases such as Great Britain’s exit from the European Union (Brexit) to illustrate the role of negotiation in matters of security, trade, and human rights. The chapter examines key theoretical approaches to international negotiation, including structural, strategic, and cultural approaches and outlines the phases of the negotiation process. The chapter also discusses the role of justice in international negotiations, we well as the ethical dilemmas surrounding the use of negotiations.
