ABSTRACT

Engagement is a word that is used by many with little thought as to what it means and how to do it effectively. What is clear, however, is that failing to engage stakeholders in issues dealing with sustainability, particularly corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives raises serious doubts about an organization’s motives and commitment. It is evident from the literature that mutuality and dialogue are key components for achieving authentic engagement. This chapter attempts to define the concept and to offer suggestions as to what organizations need to do to engage with their stakeholders in an authentic manner.
