ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of ideas for readers new to translation, localization, and internationalization. It introduces strategies for writing, revising, and/or editing to produce high quality translations for an increasingly globalized world. The chapter explores how to write, revise, and edit while focusing on professional translators’ needs and it does so in a professional context requiring increasingly rapid translations and examines how to maintain translation quality within such contexts. A controlled language is a subset of a natural language which is created using various rules to restrict the grammar and vocabulary which can be used in a text. Computer-assisted translation tools have changed the way in which professional translators work. The translation of scientific and technical documentation increased exponentially, and translators no longer considered themselves craftspeople but as professionals who made a living translating.
