ABSTRACT

On 27 June 2012, the Government of India’s Ministry of Tourism had this to say about the North-East in an item published in The Hindu titled ‘Discover Adventure’:

Let the adrenaline surge through your veins with Meghalaya or the ‘Abode of Clouds’ and its capital city, Shillong or the ‘Scotland of the East’ and the rainiest rain-belt of Cherrapunjee. Mizoram is the land of highlanders with rugged terrains, gurgling streams and rivers, ideal for adventure sports and Assam reverberates with the melody of Bhupen Hazarika, harvest festival of Bihu, colonial tea bungalows, soul stirring places of pilgrimage and ancient Ahom architectural marvels.
