Human-Automation Interaction and the Challenge of Maintaining Situation Awareness in Future Autonomous Vehicles

Automation has increasingly become a part of modern system technology in a wide variety of domain areas, from its early uses in manufacturing, aviation systems, and power systems to its current implementation in transportation vehicles. Across the past 50 years, considerable evidence has mounted demonstrating benefits from automation but also many challenges involving human interaction with automation that can contribute to catastrophic failures.
