Performing imaginary healings

The post-conflict heritage of Ebrington Barracks
WithTom Maguire

This chapter examines how the site of the former Ebrington military barracks has been transformed as a way of dealing with the city’s contested heritage. It shows how this has created a public realm denuded of the markers of the site’s military heritage, where a range of strategic but ephemeral interventions have contributed to reimagining the site. Their intersection is analysed as a series of performative practices to suggest that the site offers an opportunity to engage with heritage in a way that allows peace to be experienced, in however ephemeral and fragile a manner.
