ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a framework for training human and computer resource management skills and procedures in the context of aviation operations and the organisation. It focuses on the factors under the direct control of the operators and presents an implementation framework to be used primarily by the airlines in training and implementing automation. Flight deck automation training has been developed as a set of independent modules, with general automation practice provided to crews during Line Oriented Flight Training. The intra automation and Crew Resource Management (CRM) integration should be based on the training of specific skills, something that airlines have started doing, at least on the CRM side. Flight deck automation has grown in commercial fleets changing the nature of pilot tasks. In the early 1990s, initiatives such as the Advanced Qualification Program in the US encouraged airlines to more fully integrate CRM with technical training.
