ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a layer-wise Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) threat in an Software-Defined Networks (SDN)-wired system. It highlights the different threats to the traditional network. The chapter provides a short tutorial on various threats to the SDN architecture. It discusses the DDoS threat to SDN, as it has a devastating impact on the entire network. The chapter presents a conceptual view of SDN architecture, and classification of various attacks along with attacking tools. It classifies the threats existing in different layers of the SDN-wired environment and highlights various solutions to these threats proposed by researchers. DDoS attacks affect many organizations, IT companies, and institutions that are linked to the Internet. The network infrastructure can be acquired by SDN technology, and it provides networking-as-a-service model in cloud computing environments. SDN provides numerous benefits as well as solves the longstanding ossification problem in networking.
