ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an examination of the role of adapted sport in the lives of young children. It explores why participation in sport in the Early Years may be relevant. The chapter highlights some ways in which sports may be adapted to be more applicable to young children and, finally, and outlines a selection of examples of adapted sports. The power of sport in early childhood should not be underestimated but its provision needs careful thought, planning and adapting to ensure it is appropriate for the needs of the children it is provided for. Participation in sport in early childhood is also perceived to be beneficial in providing a foundation for children to progress on a pathway towards becoming elite athletes. British Gymnastics FUNdamentals programme aims to support children aged under 6 years to acquire essential physical, social and emotional life skills for example, strength, endurance, agility, balance, flexibility, co-ordination, concentration and team working.
