ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author draws together her work as an early childhood specialist and researcher into physical development and play – key elements required for children’s development and learning. She considers the importance of play to children’s physical development with particular reference to “The Parents and Carers as Play Partners Project” developed by Dr Kay Sanderson and myself through Middlesex University. Children around the world play, even in circumstances that are extremely challenging, such as war or deprivation. Play is essential for the healthy physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of children and is considered to be so important for children that it is included in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Playing with the baby on the floor encourages him or her to naturally practise the movements needed in the right sequence for cognitive development.
