ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the themes—the interrelationship between oppression and creativity, inhibition as a form of oppression, and the role of others in the creative process— utilising the personal, cultural, spiritual, and artistic experiences. It references other artists, activists, and leaders who were social reformers and whose work was pivotal in both effecting social change and inspiring the creativity. An artist brings a special gift to both the individual and the collective voice/community/village. The artwork is seen as a catalyst for personal, social, and spiritual transformation. "The transformation of Delia" is a story of healing, victory, and the restoration of dignity. The artwork depicts the healing and empowerment of the young adolescent girl who had been abused, dishonoured, and desecrated during her lifetime. The author believes that Delia was very aware of what was happening to her, though she may not have been thinking about someone's sexual interest in her nude body.
