ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors find that an investment in teaching in and learning about China yields rich rewards, because learning about the ancient culture offers so much in itself. While travelling to China as mental health“China hands" over the past few years, the authors have encountered increasing interest in the establishment of a psychoanalytic beachhead in China. Each patient, couple, or family they see carries a piece of the entire history, just as they all carry the histories of our own cultures. But a journey to China also becomes something else—a way of reflecting a new and from a new perspective on own cultures. Perhaps every traveller eventually comes to know that venturing in foreign lands is a way to begin to know new things about one’s homeland. The authors slowly begin to recognise that things taken as universal are really only one point of view, one way of living our lives. So it has been with working in China.
