ABSTRACT

Computer technology is with us, like it or not. Adolescence is a time of upheaval, as bodies change into new shapes along with secondary sexual characteristics and uncontrollable functions such as menstruation and spontaneous emission. Some adolescents turn to the Internet to escape the constraints of a body with which they cannot come to terms. The Internet conquers the constraints of geography and cuts across class, race, and gender difference. It offers an antidote to isolation by facilitating the creation of multiple diverse communities across the globe. Transgender, non-conforming people have found internet community a place to share and develop comfort in their identity. The globalization of trade has meant that patients move from one location to another within a multinational corporation, and they travel internationally from those locations. The practice of telephone-based therapy has a long history, beginning with its use in consultation and crisis intervention and extending into psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in private practice.
