ABSTRACT

The focus shifts between the body and the machines that decipher and monitor the body’s condition. Children endure enormous stress on their body and psyche as they submit to the treatments that offer the hope of cure. Parents suffer, blaming themselves, guilty for feeling so angry or helpless. In this chapter, the authors tells the story of Peter, who had been on life support from the moment of birth. Peter had begun to initiate and own his body in the movements of play and communication. The drama of his health was significantly more settled and yet the dramas of his relationships stormed around him. The author presents an abridged version of the actual book, which Adam read in the repetitive way of a toddler or young child.
