ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses experiential learning in the Tavistock tradition through to a reflection on the application of the learning transfer between the practice areas of psychoanalysis and organizational role analysis. It highlights some of the salient events in conference and presents a case to highlight the dilemmas in role encountered at that intersection. The development of role theory and the evolution of the practice of role consultation have been informed by many, but prominent among them are D. Armstrong, W. G. Lawrence, and B. Reed. In role consultation there is an expected outcome in accordance with a negotiated design with the client or client system. There are two areas of overlap in the practice areas that make role effects in psychoanalysis and role consultation indistinguishable: idealization and deep knowing. In psychoanalysis, one holds vivid the familial organization in which the person evolved.
