ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to how the theory and practice of a Tavistock group has implications and applications for existential psychology and matters related to existence. Existential psychology, like the study of existentialism in general, is broad and because of its connection to the philosophy of humanism, is hard to unify and define. As a general statement, existentialists posit that people should strive for authentic existence if they wish to achieve their potential and to feel “at home” in themselves and their lived experience. Introductions, adjustment to the Tavistock frame, and some initial forays into the “here and now” had occurred over those meetings. The Tavistock model of beginning and ending sessions exactly on time does enable the consultants and members to closely examine boundary dynamics. Tavistock theory places a considerable amount of importance on the notion of authorization. The Tavistock method is an excellent tool for unearthing hidden agendas and basic assumption functioning at work in systems.
