ABSTRACT

The BEAR Assessment System (BAS; Wilson, 2004) is a four-step method for developing assessments according to a construct-oriented and empirically informed approach. In this chapter, the six strands of validity evidence articulated in the Standards (AERA, APA, & NCME, 2014) are examined in terms of their possibilities for providing useful validity evidence within a BAS developmental process. Of course, this is a very large set of possibilities (6 × 4), so it is not expected that in any one development effort all cells would be addressed, only those critical for the usefulness of a particular instrument. Exemplary contents for the cells are discussed in the context of a mathematics assessment project (Wilmot, Schoenfeld, Wilson, Champney, & Zahner, 2011).
