ABSTRACT
In a world subsumed in crises of all kinds, Pablo Martínez-Zárate proposes an experimental take on journalism education based on what he terms “documentary art.” Documentary art should be understood as a methodological stance rather than a genre, one that demands journalists to explore alternative techniques for representing difficult situations and the building of bridges between journalism and art. The aspiration is to reimagine the horizons of journalistic practice and education by acknowledging journalism as a form of art. The author draws on his career as a documentarian and artist working with experimental filmmaking, web documentaries, and transmedia production, to present a methodological standpoint from which to expand the horizons of journalistic practice and education. This standpoint is also strongly rooted in Latin American radical filmmaking and critical pedagogy, offering an alternative, global-south inspired approach to address challenges faced by journalism in our contemporary turbulent world.
