Many times in my life as a director, whether in regional theater, on Broadway, or Off-Broadway, I found myself as the “first” version of me in a building—meaning the first woman of color director in an institution. And every now and then I ran into a woman or a person of color in a department at the institution who looked at me like I was a unicorn; and they came up to me and invariably put their hand on my shoulder or arm, or took my hand and, with eyes full of emotion, they said, “I love your freckles” or “I love your hair.” And I just smiled and replied, “thank you”; and then we chatted about what they do in the building.
