In this chapter I intend to explore some puzzling questions concerning Chinese communities in southern Vietnam. I believe that these questions are important in outlining a history of the Chinese in Vietnam, and for achieving a basic understanding of the nature of these communities. A common weakness of most existing scholarship on the topic of “the Chinese in Vietnam”, is the attempts to explain “Vietnam” and the “Chinese” in isolated terms. 1
