ABSTRACT
A look at the new genre of Tangkhul Naga popular music shows that cultural encounters are not always a by-product of hierarchical binary relation. Such encounters require a deeper problematization keeping in view the milieu of cross-cultural settings. Popular culture can be understood in terms of ‘multiple exposures’ and can also be seen as a case of counter-appropriation that holds on to roots and political aspirations.
