ABSTRACT

For such a strategically and historically important place, theGallipoli peninsula in modern-day Turkey is surprisingly remote. By car, the tipof the peninsula (Cape Helles) is a five-hour trip from the Istanbul airport, andtourists find it sometimes difficult to get there. However, were you to journey to the peninsula on April 25 of any given year, you would find it packed with visitors from a number of countries-Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France and, of course, Turkey itself. Moreover, every April these visitors often include heads of state, ambassadors, university rectors, soldiers and, as always, hundreds of casually dressed young people on walkabout. April 25 is Anzac Day, the national day of Australia, and every year this holiday brings Australians to Gallipoli by the cartload.
