Psychological studies, a form of left hemisphere scholarship, attempt to say things about how people think that do not depend on politics, economics, social status, family situation, or social constructions of gender and age. And in the other direction, they do not depend on neural chemistry. Consequently, viewers may respond to pictures of people in ways that closely parallel responses to their actual presence. Also, the wide aspect ratio will increase the chances that action will appear in peripheral, rather than foveal vision, a known cause of arousal. The problem with taking a single concept like audience and recasting it at different levels is that all definitions are potentially interesting, all could find a home in the field, and all seem as though they are about the same thing. But in terms of theory, they are radically different.
