ABSTRACT
In 1980 you published your first book, Cries from the Corridor, in which you document your experiences as a elementary school teacher in one of Toronto’s ‘inner-city’ suburbs. Although it became a best-seller in Canada, it was a highly controversial book. Looking back in 1989, you acknowledged that you had failed to see ‘how all of it was related to the larger socioeconomic context and technologies of power in a wider society’ (Life in Schools, p. viii). Can you tell us something about the background of that book and also about your own background and the way in which you encountered critical pedagogy?
