ABSTRACT

In Hungary before the change of the political system, there was one sole organization, the Magyar Noi Orszagos Tarsasag (MNOT) working under the administration of the Magyar Szocialista Munkas Part that was supposed to represent women and stand for their rights. The MNOT did not fight adequately against a social discrimination that was manifold in many spheres and could very clearly be demonstrated. On June 8, 1990, twenty-five members founded the Feminist Network in Budapest. It is a social movement independent of parties or the government. Socialist morality never brought about any significant change in the consideration of such taboo subjects as sexuality or violence. Sex education is all but absent from education; this has been true across all generations. In Hungary about 90,000 abortions are carried out every year. In official quarters this number, compared to the European average rate, is considered too high. Since 1956 abortion has been legal in Hungary.
