ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines diverse arguments in support of paying greater attention to the leadership development of student musicians in higher music education. The chapter highlights perspectives from different regions and contexts to explore the parameters surrounding the broader contexts of leadership, musicians’ work, institutional policy and music in higher education. The chapter highlights qualities that are required for graduate musicians to create and sustain their music careers and suggests how these qualities might be developed within higher music education so that the next generation of leaders are equipped to succeed.
