ABSTRACT

The teacher who chooses to teach autistic children is indeed taking on a very great challenge. The extent of uncertainty in the demanding field should be eased somewhat by the support of those advisory services which have played a part in assessing the child, where units are fortunate enough to have such facilities available. Frequently the health visitor who visits a family with young children regularly may be the first person to discuss with the parents their anxiety regarding a child’s slow development and odd behaviour. Most medical officers work both in the schools and in the welfare clinic, thus seeing the children of school age at routine medical inspections, as well as infants and younger children in the clinic. The paediatrician will already have carried out a full physical examination of the child, including the examination of the nervous system.
