ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to understand the reasons underlying the spectacular victory of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. It argues its victory was due to revival of the BJP’s organisation and social base. In fact, it is argued that in 2014, it was not so much a BJP as a Modi victory in UP due to a two-pronged, well-organised and strategised campaign by him and Amit Shah, using both Hindutva and development. Modi has also redefined Hindutva in the new political context.
