ABSTRACT

The agency of form is an essential part of the design discipline, and can be traced, with all its characteristics, throughout the history of architecture. Form has traditionally served as agency for aspects of performance, ornamentation, symbolism, economics, materiality, and many other intentions. Novel form is a unique entity; it is not formerly known. It can appropriate familiarity but, nonetheless, furnish a multiplicity of readings. Novel form should not copy or parrot. Rather, it should encourage replication and imitation. The building, a shed-like structure made entirely out of glass, aluminum panels, and a large structural space-frame, appeared to defy gravity by seeming to float off the ground. The team prefabricated the formation as four large assemblies, which were transported to the site and placed onto a temporary scaffold in the atrium. These assemblies were then connected atop the scaffold and the completed formation was attached to ceiling with three narrow-gauge galvanized cables that were crimped to steel plates inside sculpture.
