ABSTRACT

Using media representation and intersectional critical theory with an applied autoethnographic focus, this chapter explores the disprivilege of women at the intersection of fat, Black, and female. The chapter covers how Black women and girls face fat stigma and social justice hurdles on interpersonal, disciplinary, structural and cultural levels. Intersectional popular culture examples, particularly those using the actress Dana Elaine Owens/Queen Latifah in the television series Living Single, illuminate some of the reasons why Fat Studies is still predominantly a White space. Internalized oppression is used to explore why some fat, Black women may deny experiencing weight stigma, when they actually do. Finally, the chapter calls for more truly intersectional research, as well as consideration that weight stigma may present differently in some ways, but no less importantly for Black, fat women.
