ABSTRACT

You are offered the choice between a gift of twenty dollars, no strings attached, and one hundred dollars, also no strings attached. You take the twenty. Could a rational, not to say a sane person, make such a choice, all things being equal? No. But suppose that the twenty came with a free trip to Disneyland, while the hundred did not: that might well affect your deliberations, particularly if you had a weakness for the thrill of fast rides. If you were the sort of person for whom roller coasters were a source of anxiety, by contrast, you would likely take the hundred and be done with it. Of course there need be nothing particularly moral or immoral about choosing either of these options, and typically both will be equally rational or irrational depending on one’s preferences with respect to one’s leisure time.
