ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview on Tourette syndrome (TS) within the medical realm of treatment, and explains alternative therapies with the support of research. It highlights a holistic mind–body approach to the nonpharmaceutical treatment of TS, and will incorporate mindful meditation and art therapy to aid in the reduction of both primary and secondary symptoms. The clinical application of art therapy, from a mindfulness and holistic perspective, will support a detailed experiential using guided imagery meditation and chakra exploration to improve symptom management in TS. The practice of mindfulness goes back many centuries, and throughout many different cultures and spiritual followers. Learning to be in tune with one’s body is essential to healthy living; chakra healing can help clear pathways in our system so that positive energy can pass through the body and nurture the spirit. Art can form a bridge between the mind and body, eliciting a visceral response when engaged.
