ABSTRACT

A substantial body of literature has been produced over the years on innumerable aspects of music librarianship but little attention seems to have been directed towards the special problems of handling sets of music and the related area of collections of play sets. This chapter considers those areas which are peculiar to the administration of sets of music and plays and illustrates both common and divergent features which arise from the handling of such material. Instrumental music for larger ensembles divides fairly easily into broad categories of brass band, wind band, full orchestra and string orchestra but within these classes will be found material whose purposes are quite divergent. One of the most common approaches to both music and plays is by title, and title entries are an almost indispensible element for the efficient retrieval of information in some areas of the repertoire.
