ABSTRACT

Through the author’s 36-year career he lived, worked through and survived four recessions, including the mother of them all in 2008 as a result of the global financial meltdown.

In this chapter he reflects on the lessons learned from working and surviving through these times of crisis. The reflection is followed by a practical example of how to succeed in such an environment through the case study of Donald Russell, a supplier of top-quality meat products to the premium European horeca (hotels, restaurants and catering) market, when the business disappeared during the BSE crisis of 1996. It is a story of courage and innovation and an inspiration to others.
