ABSTRACT

This chapter examines international trafficking of migration from India with particular attention on the Sikh Punjabi population in the province of Latina (Italy) as well as the labour-recruiting processes in local agriculture. The chapter investigates the connections between international trafficking in human beings and the exploitation of migrants in the workforce, specifically illegal labour brokerage. The chapter also explores the Bella Farnia project, best practice against exploitation of labour in the province of Latina.

Labour brokerage is examined through a detailed ethnographic study by the authors. The result is a comprehensive understanding of the main elements and characteristics of international trafficking for labour exploitation in the Pontina-Punjabi workforce, recruiting processes and the use of Indians as day labourers in the Pontina Marshes and the relative socio-economic conditions.
