ABSTRACT

Highly skilled female migrants, particularly those working in male-dominated sectors, remain largely invisible within migrant discussions. This chapter makes visible the mobility trajectories of highly-skilled Indian female migrants working in the male-dominated IT sector in India and the UK. The paper draws from data collected for a comparative study of tech professionals working in Indian and the UK tech industry. A mixed-method approach to data collection was used. Data was collected by administering two surveys: tech companies in India (n = 150), and Indian and British tech workers (n = 400). In-depth interviews were conducted with 100 Indian and British respondents in India and the UK. The discussion draws on interviews and the individual survey to map the mobility of the Indian tech workers over the course of their careers as they work and live in transnational spaces. The focus is on the gendered nature of the workplaces in the UK and India, and how that impacts the experiences of women who work in and across these transnational workspace.
