ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Indian migration to the EU in the context of two important events. In the first part, the paper will examine the patterns of Indian migration to EU, pre- and post-enlargement. It will then examine whether labour from these newly accessed countries pose a threat to Indian labour. In this context, the chapter will highlight the examples of migrants from Poland and Romania who have emerged as major competitors to the Indian migrants in the EU.

The next part of the paper will talk about Indian migrants in the UK, the most important European destination country for the Indian migrants. The changes in migration pattern pre- and post-Brexit, and the effect of Brexit on Indian migration to the UK. Here the chapter will use the example of labour migration from the Indian State of Gujarat to the UK, since Gujarat has been an important source of emigration to the UK.

In conclusion, the chapter will try to analyse the effects of these two events on the Indian migration pattern to EU and explore the possible opportunities that the migrants may have due to accession of new countries in the EU and the UK exiting the EU.
