ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact on the biggest issue that drove the Leave campaign – immigration. The UK may not have left the EU, but Europeans are already leaving it. Emigration in 2016 was the highest in six years. Moreover, with the economy registering its weakest performance in six years, the UK may need immigrants more than ever. Our empirical analysis from multiple official data sources projects the impact of lower immigration on public welfare. A special emphasis is given to international student migration and in particular, Indian student migration.
