ABSTRACT

A 16-year-old female presents to the emergency department with abdominal pain. She states that she has had abdominal discomfort for the past week; however, the pain worsened in the last couple of days. She describes the pain as initially dull, but now sharp and worse in the lower abdomen. She reports that her last menstrual period was 3 months ago, but that she has “never been regular.” She also reports that she feels “bloated,” which she attributes to eating a lot of fast food, but it is worsening. She last stooled 5 days ago and states that it was “a little hard.” The patient's appetite has decreased, but she denies any vomiting, cough, fever, rhinorrhea, dysuria, diarrhea, or rash. The patient denies any sexual activity and she has never been pregnant.
