ABSTRACT

The Assessment of Phonological Processes – Revised was designed for highly unintelligible English-speaking children, and the Assessment of Phonological Processes – Spanish was developed for Spanish-speaking children with severe/profound speech disorders. The longest period of remediation time required for cognitively normal children with profound phonological disorders to become intelligible via the cycles approach, which involves facilitating patterns rather than perfecting individual phonemes, has been eighteen months. Each phonologically disordered child is an individual, and no two children have had identical phonologies; none the less, commonalities have been observed across children and for two languages. The phonological assessment instruments were designed to meet the unique needs of each language. The Spanish instrument is not a translation of the English version. Both instruments were field-tested on intelligible and unintelligible subjects to identify both normal and disordered phonological processes in the respective languages. Assessment instruments that identify critical phonological processes need to be developed in other languages.
