ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the history of contributions of private business in Kenya’s Laikipia region to black rhino conservation, identifying the specific contributions based on notable achievements. Despite the clear state ownership of black rhinoceros in Kenya and the business case for keeping black rhinoceros for eco-tourism, the private land ranches in Laikipia have been staunch supporters of the rhino sanctuary model, and by extension averted black rhinoceros extinction. The vegetation and climatic conditions have enabled diverse wildlife to thrive in the area leading to a growing tourism industry in Laikipia County. Rhino sanctuaries are secure fenced areas that were initially planned to accommodate 30 to 40 herds of black rhinoceros. The Nairobi Stock Exchange has at least 64 companies listed on it covering telecommunications and technology, manufacturing, banking, insurance, commercial services and investment that can make a contribution to the conservation of black rhinoceros.
