ABSTRACT

As Asma Khader faced the incidents of discrimination, she was left with the impression that she need to become a lawyer to develop a powerful voice in defense of human rights. She entered the field of human rights as an activist, finding ways to defend women's rights other than standing before the court. She decided to establish legal literacy programs–to raise women's awareness of different aspects of the law. She believed that both husband and wife should go to court and appear before the judge with their request for a divorce so that they can address all aspects of their relationship and reach a settlement. Her colleagues and she decided to open free legal clinics and counseling centers. They opened two centers, one with the Professional Women's Association after a conference on women workers' rights. They learned that most women workers did not know their rights, and even if they did, they lacked the resources to go to court.
